Yes, the economy's still grim. Yes, unemployment is looming. Still, electronics manufacturers manage to maintain their revolutionary edge, and fuel our dreams with the gadgets that we'll buy and play with tomorrow. Our correspondant David L. Watts shares his impressions (and his enthusiasm) after his visit to the 2010 Las Vegas CES.

Forget about today, here comes tomorrow
My overall perspective of the International Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2010 is one sentence: The future is here! I can back that statement up by the first major technology I encountered on the CES 2010 Central Hall Showroom. I immediately was blown away by the Intel Cube or Intel Infoscape.
Just as the description above states the Intel Cube is the first live tech that I’ve ever seen that looks like something that should be seen in Minority Report, Avatar or on Stargate Universe. And to be honest the Intel Cube is so impressive and mesmerizing that one cannot fully appreciate that the new Intel chip on a single lap top is running the amazing wall of living information. And although Intel created the Intel Cube only for promotional purposes, they were not thinking how it could be its best product at CES 2010.
One of the Intel Cube presenters told me that they wanted to take the Intel Cube to a major technology conference in Germany and they were told by the conference’s organizers not to bring it since it would not be new anymore. I strongly disagreed because anyone that sees and touches the Intel Infoscape will be instantly blown away. And obviously CES 2010 was more of a rebound event from CES 2009 which will likely be quickly forgotten by all retailers because of the collapse of Wall Street. But even if the world economy is still trying to become robust and generate stable profits, one can always be confident that technology is always advancing.
The real benefit of attending CES sometimes is not seeing “what’s hot” or “new”, but how will people’s lives be better by new technological advancements. Once one entered a CES hallway, there was always an amazing gadget, device, service, product or accessory. Make no doubt the future was at CES 2010.
